Design Proposal for KFUPM
2018

Since the establishment of KFUPM, it was well known for its masculine environment, this orientation has been reflected in its architectural style and the building materials used (precast concrete), which accurately fit the masculine nature, roughness, utility, and resilience.
Lately, the university decided to open its gates for women’s higher education, thus we have been requested to design their campus and academic buildings. In resemblance to a jewel found in ruins with a structure built to preserve it, the building was completed up to the roof with glazing and metal, which harmonizes with female nature, fragility, emotion, and smoothness.
This creates a high contrast with materials and respects time while celebrating history, the feminine sense can be seen and felt in the atmosphere of the architecture from the columns that lift the roof to the jewel that resides within. The twisted columns were inspired by the caryatid from Greek architecture, where they represent abstracted female figures, imitating a ballerina’s spin.
